Light and Airy

Yesterday, with the temperature at 91º, we uncovered the rest of the windows on the second floor of the Walnut Street house.

Taking down the plywood (actually sheets of OSB) isn't easy.  The sheets are heavy, and keeping them under control while lowering them down from the second floor is tricky.

So we came up with a system:  I would screw a handle onto the inside of the plywood, which gave me something to hold on to.  Once that was in place, Tom removed all the screws from the plywood, and then got out of the way.  Using the handle, I could maneuver the sheets until they were lying on the ladder - and then I'd let them slide down.

The results are amazing.  The flat is totally filthy, but we can actually see it now, and working in it will be much more pleasant.  I also opened all the windows and aired out years of mustiness.  Even on the hottest day of the year, there was a breeze blowing through the flat, which kept it cool.

The house is coming back to life.

Here are a few photos:
The bathroom

Dining room looking to back bedroom (the toilet is being hauled away)

The dining room (the pile of debris is mostly the old disgusting vinyl floor from the kitchen)

The front and back parlors

The north bedroom

Next up: Repairing/restoring all the windows, and removing the kitchen chimney.
